90 minute workshop with half day self led gallery time.
“What an amazing experience … a once in a lifetime opportunity!” – St Joseph’s Primary, Heywood
Have you ever touched a 3000-year-old ancient Egyptian artefact? Now your pupils can in this unique workshop led by our experienced learning team!
Using our ancient Egyptian collections, this workshop will build on the Big Question: Which is the most important ancient Egyptian artefact in Manchester Museum?
Through interactive challenges, pupils will develop important museum skills that help them learn from and interpret what they see, use evidence to justify their ideas, and build debating and teamwork skills. They will:
LOOK, handle, and describe artefacts
CONNECT what they see with existing knowledge about ancient Egypt
EXPLAIN what they think each artefact is and why
WONDER about what else they could investigate about ancient Egypt
As part of a full-day visit, you will also have time to explore the museum with your class as part of a self-led visit.
Your visit includes:
- A 90 minute facilitated workshop (10.30am-12pm or 12.30-2pm) including object handling and time on the Egypt & Sudan Gallery
- A set timetable to explore different galleries for the rest of your trip
- Coat and lunch storage
- A reserved 30 minute lunch slot in our Basement Education Suite lunch area
- Hazard and Risk Assessment documents
- Pre- and post-visit activities including the option to attend a curator-led Livestream event
Optional extra included in the workshop price: sign up for a free curator-led livestreamed session after your visit to us!
Important notes:
- Workshops require a minimum of four supervising adults to be present at all times, excluding 1:1 support.
- Please check your timetable carefully in advance as changes cannot be made on the day.
- Your visit will include seeing a real partially-unwrapped mummified person. The self-led part of your visit will include seeing taxidermied (deceased) animals. Some people may find these experiences challenging, so supporting resources for these sensitive areas will be provided for you to prepare your pupils and adult helpers in advance.
