Join us for a special day of curiosity and community at Manchester Museum!

Share and celebrate your recent learning, and find out what other families have been up to, in the beautiful surroundings of our Fossils Gallery.

We’ll be holding these events a couple of times a year, usually on a theme related to our most recent Home Educating Families Takeover Monday.

There are two types of tickets available:

  • Sharing Families can come along and share any relevant learning they’ve been doing. You might bring along posters, books, art projects, or anything else relevant – anything suitable for sharing on a tabletop (no edibles or natural/plant material please as they attract pests that can damage sensitive museum collections!). They’ll also have chance to meet other sharing families too (made easier if you have a few children sharing at your table, to take turns!).
  • Visiting Families will enjoy plenty of time to visit as many sharing tables as they like in the Fossils Gallery!  (Tickets are for the share at 12-1.30pm but you are welcome to arrive earlier or depart later to explore the rest of the museum.)

Please note that the museum is open to the public (including school groups) on these days, so families should be prepared to share with any visitors they encounter

Timetables

These events will typically run as follows:

11.00-11.30am: Sharing Families arrive and can enjoy an early lunch in the Picnic Area (please bring your own packed lunch).

11:30am: Sharing Families set up your sharing table in the Fossils Gallery

12:00-1:30pm: Visiting Families arrive in the Fossils Gallery. Sharing time!

1:30pm: Closing celebration.

2.00pm: Event closes but families are welcome to explore the rest of the museum.

Themes and dates

The next Home Educating Families Sharing Event will be on Thursday 21st May linked to our recent Takeover Monday which asked the Big Question: “Are birds dinosaurs?”

We are inviting families to share any recent learning and investigations linked to fossils, natural history and paleontology!

Before making their booking, Sharing Families will want to consider:

What question have you been asking to take your studies of the past further?

  • Maybe you were inspired to use our Collections Search to explore paleontology further, maybe by asking “How do scientists know what dinosaurs looked like?”.
  • Maybe paleontology is taking you into other subjects, e.g. “What was the climate like when dinosaurs were alive?”.
  • Maybe the day has made you think about extinction, to ask “What species today might be at risk of extinction and why?” or even “What will future scientists discover about our time?”.

Whatever it is – we’re sure lots of people will love to hear about it!

When you make your booking, we will ask you what topic/question you are sharing about and any ideas about content you currently have – but there’s no pressure to have all the answers at the point of booking. We’ll be in touch closer to the time to see how you’re getting on and to answer any questions. You can also get lots of advice in the UoM EHE Family Science Facebook Group.

Visiting families don't need to worry about any of that of course - please just book your tickets and show up ready to listen and learn :)

This is a free, fully funded event. Tickets are limited, so please register early. There is a waiting list if tickets are sold out.

With many thanks to UoM’s EHE Family Science Project for their support for this work and this event.
